Prevalence of FGM/C?
More than 200 million women and girls around the world have undergone FGM/C. Every year, at least 3 million are at risk for the procedure (Abebe et al. 2020).
While FGM/C is illegal at the national level, it continues to be deeply embedded within Ethiopian culture and continues to occur. A study done by Abebe et al. claim that there is consistent support for FGM/C within local communities (Abebe et al. 2020).
50% of the 55 million girls (aged 0–14) who have experienced or are at risk of FGM/C in Africa live in three countries, namely Egypt, Ethiopia and Nigeria (Obiora 2021).
“65% of women in Ethiopia between the ages of 15–49 years old have undergone FGC [4]… The prevalence is highest among the ethnic groups of the Afar (98%) and Somali regions (99%), followed by the Wolaita and Hadiya (92% prevalence for both) [4]……Nearly half (49%) of the women that underwent FGC were cut when they were below the age of five” (Abebe et al. 2020).
